Almost exclusively composed of copper, malachite is often credited with the birth of metallurgy due to its easy reduction to copper upon application of heat. In reference to its leaf-green colour its name comes from Greek for "mallow".

As its predominant formation is botryoidal (bulbous) its distinctive concentric swirls and patterns show up when it's shaped or polished. Malachite can also be found in fibrous formations giving an appearance of deep green velvet or sparkling green stars.
