Most but not all agate, which is a type of chalcedony, exhibits a very distinctive banding caused by successive infiltrations of silica bearing liquids into hardened lava pockets and cavities. The name agate comes from ancient Sicily and agates were one of the world's first lapidary stones, having been used since neolithic times.

Keywords associated with the various types of agate are: communication, growth, vitality, sexuality, and creativity. Every chakra is covered by at least one stone from the agate family.
